Update: Pilton Fly-Tipping Investigation

I wanted to share an update on the recent fly-tipping incident in Pilton that many of you will be aware of and are keen to see resolved.

Somerset Council’s Environmental Crime Team investigates and enforces against offences like fly-tipping, dog fouling, littering, graffiti, and abandoned vehicles. The team is actively investigating and we are pleased to report that real progress is being made, in large part thanks to the local community. They have visited the site, gathered photographic evidence, and — importantly — witnesses have come forward who have been able to identify a vehicle believed to be responsible. Statements are being taken and enquiries are underway to identify the driver.

This is being taken very seriously. It’s worth noting that the Environmental Crime Team has the power to prosecute fly-tippers — this is not a police matter — and has prosecuted fly-tippers more recently than previously reported. Somerset Council is committed to pursuing this case as far as the evidence allows. I’ve asked the team to visit Pilton in the coming weeks to update me in person on where they are in their investigation.

We are not able to share further details of the evidence at this stage as the case has not yet come to court, but we wanted you to know that the investigation is active and progressing well.

If you have any information that could help, please get in touch directly with the Environmental Crime Team at Somerset Council via envirocrime@somerset.gov.uk.
