Finding my quiet spot – reflecting on suicide prevention

Had to find a quiet spot near my home after 3.5 hours of Suicide Alert – Every Life Matters training I helped to organise for a group of Somerset Council Councillors.

In Somerset we have higher than average annual rates of suicide.

One person every 90 minutes takes their life in the UK. Globally it is one person every 40 seconds.

Twice as many people take their lives than die on our roads each year. Suicide deaths in numbers is the equivalent of 10 x Boeing 747 planes crashing each year, it is also the leading cause of death in young people.

But we hardly talk about it.

Today’s training powerfully conveyed that suicide is a community public health issue, and requires a community response with everyone playing their part.

I’m going to do the Orange Button training next.

Thank you to Cllr Adam Dance and his Public Health team for facilitating this training session.
